GU10's South of England Champions

GU10's South of England Champions

South of England Champions - what a fabulous result – and thoroughly deserved, reflecting the huge amount of effort and commitment put in by the whole of the squad and all our helpers and supporters.

Saturday was a day of beautiful blue sky and sunshine, and the sun certainly shone on us all day. The tournament comprised the top two teams from each of 7 counties in the South of England.

We won our pool by a clear margin, beating other strong clubs including Maidenhead, Salisbury, Wallingford and Buckingham. The semi-final against Reading was always going to be tough, but we kept pressing in their half of the pitch and got a goal.

The final was a replay of our Surrey final win, against Surbiton. This time we dominated much more of the game, and got a slightly fortunate goal, but it was certainly with the run of play, as this time they did not really threaten to score.

Throughout the day there were many excellent individual performances, but where Spencer really came into their own was their team play. The way they passed the ball round, used the width, got the ball into the D and followed up was truly impressive. An incredibly solid defensive line up meant that our defending D was rarely pressurised.

This was all amongst a great atmosphere of team spirit, both from parents and also other girls from the squad and the GU12 who came to support. This was rounded off by a team picnic and cheering on the GU12 in the afternoon.

The whole day was a very fitting end to a great season: starting with our tour to Kent, battling through the ice and snow of the New Year, all three teams getting through to the playoffs in the Surreys, to being crowned Champions of the South.

Congratulations to them all, team and coaches.
