BATTERSEA BUILDERS Sponsor Spencer U10 GIRLS’ Cambridge Tour
A group of 26 excited Spencer girls, accompanied by parents, set off on Saturday 12th March for their first hockey tour to Cambridge, generously sponsored by Battersea Builders. The girls looked fabulous in their tour hoodies, and with the sky blue and sun shining, everyone arrived in Cambridge in wonderful spirits.

Making the most of the incredible weather, the majority of the tour party headed into Cambridge to go punting. There were water fights and high spirits, and a wonderful opportunity to see the sights. And, remarkably, no one went in for a swim. After a brief stop for ice creams and sweets, we made our way through the Cambridge Backs to the Cambridge University Sports Ground, for an internal hockey tournament. The girls were split into three teams, very keen to take on and beat a fourth team, of The Coaches. There were fewer collisions than anticipated, and remarkably no injuries. And, rumour has it that the Coaches are now past it, with at least one match ending in defeat for them!

Dinner followed at a local pub, a short walk away, with two rowdy tables of parents in the main part of the pub, and a much rowdier group of 9/10 year olds in their private dining room. It was a lovely opportunity for the girls and parents alike to get to know the rest of the squad better.

After a much-deserved good night’s sleep, another beautiful day dawned and there was time for a quick a game of rounders in the hotel grounds, before the group set off to the next fixture, against Cambridge City Hockey Club. Thanks to them, again, for hosting us. Each club fielded three teams, which all played each other. It was hot out there on the pitch, and particular mention has to go to the Spencer keepers, Emma and Onora, who played for Spencer and also for Cambridge without a break. (Although, they were seen sunbathing in full kit in between matches.) All the teams were well-matched, and the girls played some beautiful hockey, all smiling, making the coaches very proud.

All in all, a very successful first tour. But asked where they want to go next year, the girls answered Hawaii…. And, yes, they do play hockey there.
