Spencer Women's 1
1-2
Oxford University Ladies 1st
  • Hattie

Showing their Spencer spirit, the Women’s 1s* kicked off their Saturday cheering on the Women’s 2s and Men’s 1 from the side lines. With both teams coming away with solid victories at the beloved Fieldview Fortress, the ladies were ready to make it 3 out of 3 against 2nd in the league Oxford University 1s.

The game began at a high intensity with both teams looking to dominate. Spencer looked confident transferring the ball around and using the full width of the pitch to their advantage, created space down the lines early on for Emma to drive down the right baseline and win the first short corner of the game. With an excellent strike from top D, Spencer were unlucky to not take the lead with a deflection narrowly missing the left post. As time ticked on the away side started to gain in confidence looking dangerous on the break but with Spencer defence of Brooky, Fergie and Libby holding firm, half time saw the score lie locked at 0-0.

Having changed up their pressing formation, Oxford Uni started the second half by attacking aggressively. With numerous entries into the D, Spencer relied on Nevvy to pull out her world-class saves to keep them in the game. Spencer were able to re-group and began to once again take control of the midfield. Some great attacking play enabled Hattie to deliver one of her specials from close range to open the scoring line.

1-0 and with 10 minutes to go, Spencer just needed to hold out the game however, as we all know, it’s easier said than done and with nerves starting to creep in, Oxford won a number of shorts in close succession. Finally, a well taken drag flick levelled the game to 1-1 with 3 minutes to go. Disappointed by the equaliser, Spencer lost some structure and unfortunately, Oxford were able to capitalise on this with a ball through the middle of the pitch to their centre forward who took her chance at the top of the D to win the game 2-1.

A tough defeat to take but Spencer will take the positives of the passing play into next weekend’s fixture away vs Brighton and will be hungry to bring home the win for Coach Bennett’s hen-do.

*minus our vice-captain and this week's DOD who was stricken with guilt for making the decision to skip her supportive duties for her fully-packed social life.
