After an exciting win against Tulse Hill & Dulwich the previous weekend, the Spencer Women's 1s were full of confidence travelling down to Witney (all 2.5 hours of it). With a decent doss of brunch, banter and boom box the ladies were tasked to get at least a short corner in the first five minutes by tough talking coach, Adene Bennett. Within one minute from the whistle blowing, Spencer had managed to win a short corner - objective 1 - check.

With an accurate ball out to the top for a sharp stop by Kiri, sneaky pass to Annie to be slapped across the D, for a dink into the right hand corner by Georgie. Spencer took the lead in less than 90 seconds.

Important not to get ahead of themselves, Spencer knew they had to remain composed and continue to play their game. With Witney trying to use a half court press to their advantage the experienced Spencer defence were not phased, and just continued to stretch the pitch by transferring the ball. Therefore some great patience shown from the back line of Hayley, Brooky, Jodie and Fergie meant that Spencer kept possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. With some speedy Witney players up front, they did try to rattle the Spencer defence and made some aggressive runs down the pitch towards the goal. Unfortunately one of these runs was to the detriment of the Spencer backline with star player Jodie twisting her knee unnaturally and had to be carried off the pitch to A&E. Trooper that she is, only a glass of prosecco that evening could reduce the pain…

A slightly rattled Spencer side had to keep their heads for the remaining 9 minutes of the first half to keep the score 1-0 at half time.

With the sun starting to shine in the second half, the Spencer team knew they needed to get another goal to take the pressure off, slightly. With no lack of trying, the Spencer midfield continued to transfer the ball through Annie and Emily in the middle out to fast paced wingers Dawks, Kiri and Libby. Playing some of their best passing hockey, it was a speedy run from Georgie around the baseline with a pass into the p-spot for unsuspecting recipient Libby to smash the ball into the Witney goal to take the team 2-0 up. With continuous attacking play from the front line, Anna, Emma and Hattie, Spencer looked as though they would take the lead further. However, Witney managed to keep the score line to 2-0 to finish a wet and eventful game. Spencer face 3rd placed opposition, Oxford University, in what is likely to be an even tougher game next weekend.
