Spencer Ladies 1s took on local rivals Wayfarers 1s at the fieldview fortress on Saturday 29th. Spencer had previously come through a tough game against Teddington with three well deserved points, they were looking to build on this performance. The game began with possession and territory dominated by Wayfarers, the Spencer defence of Jodie Bellamy, Hayley Nunnerly and Sarah Brook defended well against the quick and strong Wayfarers forwards. Spencer then began to regain control in mid-field, with both Annie Gamble and Emily Masson making attacking moves and spreading the play wide to enable some promising attacking moves. Georgie Everitt used her pace to drive the right base line, slipping the ball to Hattie Robinson who upgraded the move to a short-corner. A well executed short-corner routine resulted in Jenna Stockwell getting onto the scoring sheet. Spencer were pleased to take this advantage into half-time, needing to regroup.

The second half saw some promising play from Spencer Ladies, seeing midfielders Hettie Cust, Sarah Dawkins and Kiri Macfarlane utilising the width of the pitch to play the ball into the Spencers forwards. However, Wayfarers were still attacking aggressively and quickly trying to get an equaliser. Nerys Hamlett in goal commanded Spencers D emphatically, making three quick successive saves keeping the score-line 1-0. Lovely link-up play between Alex Thornton, Anna Sherring and Claire Somerset nearly doubled the difference for Spencer. However, Spencer went down to 10 players and the Wayfarers continued to push forward, following a quick free-hit Wayfarers equalled the scoring. The last 15 minutes of the game consisted of some committed defending from all Spencer players. Hayley Nunnerly, in particular, had a tough 15 in the left back position against some physical forwards but held her own and managed to relieve the pressure on the defence. Nerys Hamlett made an outstanding save in the closing moments of the game to keep the score 1-1 after a long hot physical match.
