About Spencer Hockey Club
Founded over a century ago, Spencer is one of the most vibrant hockey clubs in the country. We run 12 men's teams, 7women's teams, mixed hockey and a thriving junior hockey section. For a brief time in the 1970s we had the finest club side in Europe, and twice in the last three seasons we’ve won the Watson Bowl for the London League Club of the Year. But playing success is only part of the story: our ambition is to provide the most enjoyable hockey we can for everyone from the youngest child to the oldest adult.
A sense of community has always been important to us. As part of the multi-sports Spencer Club we’ve been able to redevelop our facilities, adding an Astroturf pitch at our home ground Fieldview. This has brought our teams even closer together socially.
Competitive hockey matches take place on Saturdays. Pre-season training starts in July and competitive matches run from September to early April. Skills and fitness training take place on mid-week evenings, times vary depending on the team played for.
Our men's 1st XI plays in South Premier 1, the division below National League. Most of our men's teams are in the Higgins Group London League, while our women's 1st XI competes in the South Clubs' Women's Hockey League Div 2. Other women's teams compete in Surrey Ladies Leagues.
We also compete in various EH cup and Surrey cup knockout competitions, including the EH mixed cup. This mixed cup team is selected from our higher men's and women's sides. Cup matches take place on Sundays.
At junior level we run teams for players aged 5 to 16, and almost all age groups get the opportunity to play matches against other local clubs. After the age of 16, juniors transfer to our adult development teams and continue to represent Spencer at a higher level. We support talented players towards county and regional development centre training. Junior matches and training take place on Sundays, although U14 and U16 may have mid week training. More information on juniors.
Spencer HC is affiliated to England Hockey, the governing body for hockey in England.
Mixed adult hockey provides a more relaxed though equally enjoyable outlet for many players.
Friday Night Mixed meets at 7:45-9pm every Friday all year round (not school holidays), and mainly attracts the player looking for a slightly slower pace or someone returning from injury. Friday night hockey players do not usually play competitive Saturday hockey, and there is a charge of £120 for half year. Format may be 6-a-side on half pitch, maybe 11-a-side depending on turn out. No drills, just match play. Drinks at the bar compulsory afterwards. Contact Friday Night hockey.
Summer League is a 6 or 7-a-side format where teams from Spencer and other clubs compete at Spencer's all weather pitch in leagues. Go to Summer League
Tours are organised in the off season by individual club members. Contact the club captains for news of what tours are going where. At every level we’re looking to take the next step up; training hard but playing fair - there's only one Spencer Hockey Club.
